How to develop your portfolio?

This article is aimed towards beginners but existing professionals can find these tips useful too.

Show reel has been a topic of discussion for a long time. People struggle to put their work together for that presentation, which will help them to get an interview call. I look at an interview process as the result of Preparation, Compilation and Presentation.

Preparation

When it comes to preparation, the prospective employee must be thoroughly prepared. Pitching in studios with a common show reel is not a good idea; the showreel must be studio specific;. A few things that you should find out about a studio before compiling your Final works:

  • What is their portfolio?
  • What they are looking for?
  • How do they expect to see the work (which format)?
  • If possible, a reference in the studio.

Most of this information is already available on a studio’s website.

Compilation

Compilation is all about the selection. What to display and what not to display!. A good research about a studio’s past and present works would give you a fair idea about creating your showreel. No substandard work must be added. In case you are doubtful about any such work then try to improve it or else remove it.

Presentation

This part of the process is all about presenting what you have, right from the CD covers to the content inside. The layout, color scheme and the music in the reel must complement each other.

All the three parts of the process are equally important and none should be ignored.

Guidelines for further approach.

Cover Letter:

  • It is always good to add a short and precise covering letter.
  • Always mention the department you are applying for, ensuring that your reel is assessed by the right person.
  • If you were referred by someone, definitely mention it.
  • Include a few references.
  • There is a great quote: “When your work speaks for itself, there’s no need to interrupt”. Do not over-write. It sets high expectations and makes the interviewer more critical in his judgment.
  • Check your spelling, grammar, punctuation and typos. Mistakes in your writing will suggest that you don’t revise.

Resume:

  • Avoid irrelevant experience; it just lengthens the CV.
  • Mention hobbies related to the nature of your work. It adds to the interest level. For example, animators involved in acting would be highly appreciated.
  • If looking forward to a head position do mention it in your CV but do not over-state.

Demo Reel:

  • A website is a quick and acceptable way of showcasing your work to your prospective employer these days. Most companies clearly mention how they want the show reels to reach them on their website.
  • Many portfolios are accessible on web these days. Watch as many as possible. Study them (layouts, presentation style, music and visuals in sync, speed of the reel etc) and come up with your own style of presentation.
  • Put your best works first. Due to the volume of reels received for review, if the first few seconds of a reel are not interesting then the rest is examined in fast-forward mode and examiners might miss your best piece.
  • Don’t repeat any work. It gives the feeling that you do not have sufficient work to display.
  • Keep it short! Three minutes is the general target length.
  • Have simple and short introductions. Get to the main part of your reel as soon as possible.
  • DO NOT PUT OTHER PEOPLE’S WORK ON YOUR REEL! If at all there is some reference data, give credit to the creator of the work. This adds value and authenticity to your approach.
  • Don’t send inappropriate work. A studio that works on realistic art works might not show much interest in stylized works.
  • Label your CD/DVD clearly. Put your contact information on the body of the CD/DVD. This makes it easier to locate CD/DVDs in case they separate from the resumes.Drawing and sketches could help to showcase your traditional skills. But only the best must be included or else it will backfire.
  • Animators should have acting in their animation movie clips. Try to animate emotions. Present different styles (classical, semi-realistic, stop motion or realistic) in order to show your command over the skill.   • Don’t mention the abilities that you don’t want to be discussing.
  • Unreleased work should be on the reel by consent of the employer. The same should be conveyed to the interviewer to avoid mishandling.

  • Include some personal work on your reel. It helps to understand what you can do on your own as well as what you can do as part of a team or when being directed.

Interview:

  • Research about the company before appearing for the interview. Most likely you will be asked why you want to join the organization. Your answer must be as natural as possible, as further questions would depend on it. Be true of what you say and try to add value to the answer.
  • Be on time. Remember, first impression is the lasting impression.
  • Dress appropriately. It is ok to be better dressed then the interviewer; he is already in job and you are looking for one.
  • Try to reflect a positive attitude and share all your positive qualities complimented with examples. If you want to mention that you are a great Team Player, then do support it with instances.
  • Keep extra copies of your resume. Your previous resume or reel might not be handy with the interviewer.
  • Never speak negative about any colleague or employer; it’s a negative approach. If at all you happen to mention something, put it in a subtle manner.

Follow up:

Keep in mind that it often takes a while before a demo reels gets reviewed. If you haven’t heard anything for 2 weeks or so, it is okay to call and make sure your submission was received. But don’t be a pest. After an interview, it is always a good idea to send a (genuine) follow up letter thanking your prospective employer for taking the time to meet you. But do not contact the company repeatedly. If you don’t get hired and you really want to work at a particular company, resubmit your materials in 6 months or so. Studio’s needs and criteria change all the time. Your skills/style might not have been appropriate for last year’s project, but they might be right for the new one.

3D Topology

Why Do We Need Topology in 3D Modeling

In 3d modeling, the topology shows how well in your 3D model vertices it is organized. So, it is essential that you maintain a good, clean topology when building your 3D models.But it will take quite a long time to be a professional modeler. First, let’s define what topology actually is. Topology is organizing the lineflow and structure of vertices/edges/faces of a 3D model. It is how well you can organize your vertices in your 3D model such that it is efficient, clean and detailed.

It is important that you maintain good, clean topology when building your 3D models. Maintaining good topology has a numerous amount of benefits:

  • Easier to work with – You can easily make modifications to a model that has nice topology compared to a model with bad, messy topology where vertices just hang around randomly for no good reason.
  • Makes deformed animations look fluid – The animators in your production team will be forever grateful if you incorporate good topology into your 3D modeling workflow. When vertices are organized in a way that makes sense with how objects bend and deform, animation becomes easier and smooth looking. With bad topology, animation becomes a little difficult and even if you manage to nudge out some animation, the result will look horrid with a lot of artefacts like punching and weird stretching in places.
  • No weird artefacts – Not only for animations, but your 3D model in general may be susceptible to weird artifacts like pinching and stretching in places if your topology is bad and unorganized. These may also be caused by some vertices overlapping one another.
  • Modifiers work smoothly – Popular modifiers like SubSurf will work better on models with good topology. You will get a nice smooth result without doing much tweaking. Adding a SubSurf modifier on a model with bad topology may introduce strange, unexpected results where your model won’t end up looking like your model.
  • It looks neater – 3D models with good topology still look good if you see a wireframe of the same model. It has a nice organized look. This is beneficial if you would like to sell your 3D models in a marketplace. People generally buy a 3D model if they see a model and will likely examine the wireframe images. This can determine whether people will buy it or not. Not only for selling though. If you work in a team environment, it is always pleasant for the other 3D modeler to use your models when you have nice, clean topology.
  • It uses less memory – A model with bad topology with hundreds of vertices/edges/faces is going to hog up valuable memory space. You don’t want to have hundreds of vertices just to model a cube. 8 vertices would be enough to get the job done. No point showing off. Good topology ensures that you create a 3D object using the least amount of vertices as necessary, so that your computer will electronically thank you and give you a big hug if you incorporate good topology in your workflow.

A good 3D modeler always ensures good topology in their 3D models. Here are some tips that I’ve learned, that will ensure your 3D model has good, clean topology.

  • Use the least amount of vertices as necessary to get the job done for your 3D model. If you want to smooth things out, try using the SubSurf modifier.
  • Try to make all your faces quads. Quads means 4 vertices. A Tri is 3 vertices. By aiming to have ALL the faces in your 3D model Quads, you will eliminate artefacts such as pinching.
  • Make all your faces as even-sized squares as possible. Try to make all the quad faces in your 3D model as even-sized as possible throughout your entire model. Don’t create too big faces or too small faces at random places. There may be some exceptions like the face and legs. The legs can afford to have larger faces since it isn’t as detailed as the face. But even on the face alone, try to aim mostly for even-sized squares as possible. Watch the behind-the-scenes of famous animation movies and you’ll notice that a lot of their model’s wireframes contain mostly even-sized squares. There are exceptions like in simple hard-surfaced models (like tables for example).
  • Try to use circular loops in areas where joints in your model will bend. I find having circular loops around joints helps in giving smoother bends. Like the elbow or knees for example. It can be helpful to have a bunch of circular loops perpendicular to the direction of the bend.

The evolution of Tom & Jerry

There is not a single one of us who have not seen Tom & Jerry, or don’t recollect the cat & mouse chase. This adorable duo forms an important part of our growing up years. But over a period of time, they too have evolved. Let’s travel back in time with this classic pair.

Hanna-Barbera (1940-1958)

Yes, they are that old!

The original creators of the cat & the mouse, William Hanna & Joseph Barbera worked for the MGM cartoon studio. Burdened with the task of directing profit-generating films for the studio, the pair came up with the idea. But it was met with opposition. After all, there had been enough cat & mouse cartoons. However, Hanna-Barbera stood their ground, and Tom & Jerry made their debut in February 1940 in the short Puss Gets the Boot. But they were yet to become Tom and Jerry. On their introduction, they were Jasper and Jinx. The short was an instant hit but the names were not. Hanna-Barbera offered studio employees a US$ 50 prize to come up with the best name. And Tom & Jerry were born.

While Jerry’s physical appearance has changed very little, Tom has transformed over the years. During this period Tom had a very round face and an unruly fur. Although changes were made to the characters over the years, these initial years are considered to the golden era for Tom & Jerry. Under Hanna-Barbera’s supervision, MGM produced 114 animated shorts, and won seven Academy Awards.

Gene Deitch (1961-1962)

When the franchise was revived by MGM in 1961, they hired Rembrandt Films to produce 13 shorts. Gene Deitch headed this project. These 13 differed from Hanna-Barbera’s original in their settings. Unlike the originals that were set inside or outside a house, these 13 shorts moved to more exotic locations including a whaling ship, jungles of Nairobi, Ancient Greek acropolis, and the Wild West. They also changed Tom’s owner Mammy Two-Shoes, a heavy-set, middle-aged, black woman, to Clint Cobbler, a bald, overweight, short-tempered, middle-aged white man.

Although none of these films were nominated for the Academy Awards, they were a huge commercial success, becoming the highest-grossing animated short film series of the time, breaking the record of Looney Tunes.

Chuck Jones (1963-1967)

The man behind Looney Tunes’ Wile E Coyote and Roadrunner started his own studio with 34 shorts of Tom & Jerry made between 1963 & 1967. Jones brought his characteristic style to the characters. Tom got Wile E-style bushy, knitted eyebrows, a gray fur, sharper ears, longer tail, and fuller cheeks like Sylvester, while Jerry was given bigger ears and cuter facial characteristics on the lines of Porky Pig. Jones’s Tom & Jerry series also introduced the iconic theme tune that is used to this day, and the timeless title sequence with a hissing Tom replacing MGM’s trademark roaring lion.

Hanna-Barbera’s The Tom and Jerry Show (1975-1977)

Tom & Jerry returned home with their own TV series – The Tom and Jerry Show. But there were some visible differences. The series had 48 new seven-minute adventures. But there were strict new rules against violence in kids’ television. This meant that the amount and form of violence had to be toned down, and often the sworn enemies had to become best friends or at least help each other. To keep in line with this new kid-friendly series, Jerry was given a new accessory – a red bow-tie.

Filmation Studios (1980-1982)

When Filmation Studios took over production, the cat & mouse duo returned to television with a new series but with their original tricks. The Tom and Jerry Comedy Show also brought back other animated characters from the original series, including Droopy, Barney the Bear and Spike, giving them more material to play with.

Tom and Jerry Kids (1990-1994)

Weekend television cartoon in the 1980s & 90s saw the emerging trend of ‘babyfication’ or popular cartoon characters. Tom & Jerry also joined the bandwagon, and the series featured a bow-tie wearing Jerry and a red cap-wearing Tom chasing each other. Spike and his son Tyke (with dialogues), and Droopy and his son Dripple also made cameo appearances.

Warner Bros.’ Tom and Jerry (2006-2008)

Warner Bros. produced the Tom and Jerry Tales. This was a 13-part series of half-hour shows, each featuring three adventures that utilised the slapstick chase style of the original.

Warner Bros.’ The Tom and Jerry Show (2014-present day)

Barring the occasional reruns on Cartoon Network, there was nothing happening with this iconic duo. Tom and Jerry were resurrected for television in 2014. And a second season was launched in 2015, just before their 75th birthday. Not much has changed in Tom & Jerry themselves, but the Flash animation used by Warner Bros. gives the series a more contemporary 2D style.

The series retains the feel of the original, but little things like the digital read-out on the cooker, remind us that the cat & mouse are now in the 21st century. Occasionally, modern gadgets also make an appearance.
